A sudden, tragic loss shatters our sense of order. It abruptly thrusts us into a world forever
changed. Survivors of a loss experience a greater sense of vulnerability and heightened anxiety. The safe world that you once
knew no longer exists.
We all experience feelings of grief and loss. Everyone is unique in how they cope with their losses. Some people
choose to ignore their sad feelings and move on with their lives. They might bury themselves in their work. Other
people may feel overwhelmed and all alone. They may use drugs or alcohol to numb the pain. Others will respond
in anger; they want to lash out and protect themselves.
The more intense the relationship, the longer it will take you to grieve its
loss. Trying to make sense of and to understand a sudden loss can be overwhelming. When someone you love dies unexpectedly
or violently, their death can leave you feeling alone and bewildered. There was no time to say good-bye. There
was no time to say, "I love you."
